Welding Fume Extraction Systems

Information to consider for welding fume extraction systems

Many cost effective welding fume extraction systems have been designed, supplied and installed.

Consideration of the following needs to be taken into account:

  • Types of parts / equipment being welded, sizes shapes etc.
  • Materials being welded; stainless steel, aluminium, galvanised, mild steel etc.
  • Area(s) in which welding is carried out
  • External and general ventilation conditions
  • Frequency of welding.
  • Potential of flammable/explosive dusts being extracted / filtered

From the initial assessment the most appropriate type of welding system can be specified and quoted. For instance:

  • Weld fume extraction arms, portable and fixed with / without filtration
  • Welding rear-draught plenums and benches
  • Standalone systems
  • Centralised systems consisting possibly of both types of above system
  • Installation of spark arrestors prior to filters.
  • Automatic start of extraction system from welder or arc creation.
  • Filtration system; dry, with scrubber or wet arrestor / scrubber system
  • Considerations of filtration to atmosphere or return air systems (heat recovery or filtered with emissions monitoring)
    • Note return air systems can provide considerable energy savings
  • Type of filter media; efficiency, flame retardant, spark ‘blocker’
