MCERTs Stack Emission ISO-Kinetic Sampling and Monitoring


For Local Authority (LA) or Environmental Agency requirements, MCERTS, iso-kinetic particulate, VOC or other pollutant stack monitoring will be required. The requirements and limits depend upon the process guidance notes, types of processes pollutants and air flows etc. This is carried out with our MCERTS certified stack monitoring Engineers.

Iso-kinetic and Gas Emission Stack Monitoring

An MCERT’s accredited stack testing service is provided, normally required for IPPC regulations and ongoing compliance testing.

We can provide the following stack / in-duct monitoring and relevant services

  1. Supply/erect stack monitoring, scaffold platforms
  2. Supply and install stack bosses, for monitoring equipment access.
  3. Carry out Isokinetic Stack Emission Particulate Monitoring, to the main procedural requirements of BS9096:2003 or BS13284 :2001 using the US EPA Method 5 sampling train
  4. Provide sampling for a whole range of pollutants / substances, using appropriate MCERTS, EPA, BS methods etc, including:
    • Oxides of Nitogen, , 
    • Dioxins and Furans,
    • Isocyanates to the main procedural requirements of BS13526 (US EPA 207).
    • VOC’s using  flame ionisation detector (FID, Signal 3000HM).
    • acid gases, Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) and Formaldehyde to the main procedural requirements of US EPA Method 26A
  5. low-cost Indicative sampling of VOC’s (hydrocarbons), to provide indicative results of hydrocarbons and species, in stack exhaust gases
  6. Continuous emission monitoring sensor calibration.


Ancillary measurements are taken as required to ensure all measurements can be normalized to STP; for instance gas temperature and flow rate, oxygen concentration, moisture (water vapour) present.

The moisture content in the stack gas will be determined by gravimetric impingement tests based upon US EPA Method 4. Where water vapour is present in appreciable droplets this test is inappropriate and the gas will be assumed to be saturated at its temperature and pressure. The moisture content will be determined from Air-Water equilibrium tables.


A results summary will be issued in the form of a signed STACK EMISSION CERTIFICATE for presentation to our customers authorising body. The CERTIFICATE will also contain Site, Plant, Operational and Production details and the current release limits for comparison.




The report will contain details of the sampling procedure, equipment used and details of any non-conformities or changes from the stated British or European Standards if these cannot be fully met on site. In addition to pollutant concentrations, the stack gas temperatures, efflux velocity, mass emission rates and all on-site test data will be reported.

The Environment Agency has set up the Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) to provide guidelines on the standards required for environmental monitoring . MCERTS covers:

•    recognising laboratories, in line with European and international standards.
